Process · when to use this
- External party says "I can't login" or "access denied" on a CLA SP folder · paste URL + their email → grant in 1 click
- You moved/renamed a folder · existing shares broke · re-grant all stakeholders in batch
- New client engagement · grant 2-3 client contacts to the engagement folder at engagement-start
- Vendor / regulator audit · grant time-bounded access (caveat: Graph doesn't support time-bound from this endpoint yet · revoke manually when done via SP UI)
What this does NOT do
- Doesn't revoke access · use SP UI for that (Manage access → Remove)
- Doesn't grant access to the parent site · only the specific folder URL you pass
- Doesn't bypass conditional-access policies · if the recipient's M365 tenant blocks external sharing on their side, the invite shows "pending" until they accept
- Doesn't work for files (only folders) · file-level shares go via the Bridge file-share tool
